Mathematics is the language of nature. It is the human mind's process of symbolizing the processes of the natural world in order to understand and utilize them better. Mathematics is the foundation of science and technology. Although most people are intimidated by the study of math, it is important to understand that learning math is a process. If we start with a solid understanding of the basics and then advance gradually, it becomes clear that mathematical thought evolves in a very practical and efficient manner. If we just take our time, relax, and exercise some self-discipline we can be applying mathematical theory in no time.
Since mathematics is the fundamental language of the natural world, and since the traveler is one who explores the world and nature, then mathematics is a very applicable tool/skill for the traveler to develop. Math applies directly to many aspects of travel. Basic arithmetic applies to budgeting time and money. Algebra and trigonometry aplly to navigation (especially in the wilderness).
