MIND-BODY FITNESS |
The three fundamental aspects of physical fitness are: aerobic (cardiopulmonary) conditioning, anaerobic (strength) conditioning, and flexibility conditioning. The fundamental aspects of mental fitness are : cognitive conditioning (learning, problem solving, etc.) and meditation. The aspect of cognitive conditioning is addressed in other sections. Here we will focus on the aspects of aerobic, anaerobic, flexibility, and meditation.
In this section we are introduced to a fitness program which addresses all of the fundamental aspects of mind/body fitness which require physical conditioning. This program is concise, can be performed anywhere, and is intended for long-term physical and mental development.
Total fitness addresses the three fundamental aspects of mind-body function: aerobic (cardiopulmonary), anaerobic (strength), and flexibility. Together these form a strong foundation which promotes health, stamina, and growth potential.
In order to gain the most benefit of any fitness program, it is important to consider the basic needs of the mind-body system in formulating the routine. These needs include the manner in which the system develops naturally. The process of development is one which incorporates the alternating forces of tension and release. This cycle is a manifestation of the fundamental universal forces of creation and destruction. By gradually increasing resistance towards the bodily systems, they are encouraged to compensate by adapting their level of functioning to meet the new demands. However, it is important not overwhelm the system with resistance. Too much demand on the system (too quickly) will exceed the ability of the system to naturally compensate. This will cause it to deteriorate, and result in injury and/or illness. After applying resistance to the system it is vital that it be given time to rest and recuperate. After rest and recuperation the system will function at a higher level. It is also imperative that the system be supplied with the necessary energy resources (in the form of nutrients) that it needs to compensate for higher energy output during exercise. A fitness program which addresses these basic needs will be most productive in increasing the overall functioning level of the mind-body system. The routine outline in this section incorporates these natural requirements.
In accordance with the alternating resistance and rest principle, this routine is performed every other day, allowing for 2 days of recuperation time between workouts. All three conditioning components can be performed either indoors or outdoors and with or without specialized equipment (ex. treadmill, weight training equipment, etc.). Although the anaerobic component is included as one of the basics, it can be considered optional (since the aerobic conditioning and flexibility (yoga) components contribute adequate strength building resistance). Therefore, the entire necessary routine can be performed in most locations and environments with a minimum equipment requirement (all you need is running footwear and clothing). The proper order of the routine (flexibility > aerobic > anaerobic) is important as it accounts for changes in the physiological function throughout the workout.
This mind-body fitness program should be incorporated into a life-long healthy lifestyle program.
