TRAVEL MEDICINE & FIRST AID |
Introduction
Preparing For The Trip
Adequate functioning and minimum presence of disease is a fundamental requirement for world travel. Travel requires a large degree of strength, stamina, and concentration - all of which are lessened by physical ailment (in the body or mind). Health maintenance involves a continuous process of preventative maintenance (fitness, nutrition, immunizations, etc.) and adequate, timely, response to illness when it occurs (medical treatment, medication, first aid, etc.).
Basic knowledge of health, medicine and first aid is a great asset to the traveler, who will likely encounter situations where the knowledge can be applied. In adition it makes communication between patient and physician easier when necessary - which can speed and increase the effectiveness of medical treatment.
Travel in foreign countries poses increased health risk to travelers. Many less developed countries have higher rates and potencies of disease, and lesser quality of medical care (if any). Treatment methods can often be primitive and even unsafe.
